First can you tell me a little bit about yourself and your business?

Jennifer

My name is Jennifer and I am the owner & designer of Jenni Lovette Jewelry. I design quality, handmade jewelry that speaks to your inner beauty as well as your outward appearance. I offer both simple and edgy pieces for women and teens. I plan to focus a little more on men’s accessories as well this year.

How long have you been in business and was your business a spinoff of you going natural; explain if yes.

Jennifer

I launched Jenni Lovette in August of 2009 and it was not a spinoff of me being natural. I just felt like it was time for me to make a change from the norm that I was comfortable with.

Fanzyflaminfro

How long have you been natural and why did you choose to go natural?

Jennifer

I have been natural since October of 2005. I decided to return to my natural hair because I had grown tired of the harsh relaxer chemicals and the cost of maintenance.

Fanzyflaminfro

Did you transition or big chop and why or why not?

Jennifer

I transitioned for 2 months before finally doing my big chop. I decided to big chop because I had tried quite a few transitional hairstyles but I just didn’t like the texture of the straight hair.

How did others (family, friends, and colleagues) react to your decision to go natural and/or starting your business?

Jennifer

Everyone was surprised because it was so sudden, but I didn’t receive any negative feedback. Just a lot of questions.

Fanzyflaminfro

How do they feel now, about your decision to go natural?

Jennifer

My friends and family are totally used to me being natural now. They are very supportive.

Fanzyflaminfro

What is/was your biggest hair challenge/obstacle?

Jennifer

I think my biggest challenge so far is keeping my hair moisturized. My hair soaks up pretty much everything and it can be difficult at times.

Fanzyflaminfro

What is/was your biggest business challenge/obstacle?

Jennifer

I had to learn not to take everything personal when it came to my business. I’m still learning to keep an open mind about my designs and my customers.

Fanzyflaminfro

What do you love most about your natural hair and/or about being natural?

Jennifer

I love the freedom of being versatile. You can be versatile with relaxed hair also, but for me it feels different. I also enjoy being able to scratch my scalp and not worry about being burned because of it.

Fanzyflaminfro

What is your current hair regimen?

Jennifer

I always get the side eye when I answer this question. My regimen is very minimal. I often say that my motto is “let it go and let it grow.”  When I do wash and/or condition, I like to use Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Shampoo and Conditioner. I section my hair into 6-8 twists and wash with the twists still intact. That prevents me from having to detangle again.

Fanzyflaminfro

Has your hair changed in any major way since you first went natural?

Jennifer

No, other than the fact that I washed more when my hair was shorter, I still had minimal maintenance even then.

Fanzyflaminfro

What are your staple products that you use?

Jennifer

Most of the products that I love right now are from Lace Natural. You can find butters and just about everything you need for skin and hair care from this website. www.lacenatural.com Thank me later.

Fanzyflaminfro

What is your “go to” style (share a picture of it, if you have one!)?

Jennifer

That would be my side puff. I rock that whenever I just don’t have the time to do anything else to my hair.

Fanzyflaminfro

Do you wear protective and/or low manipulation styles?

Jennifer

Yes, my favorites are twists/mini twists. I can keep those up for weeks or sometimes even a month or two.

How often do you cut/trim your hair?

Jennifer

I only trim my hair when my ends feel really rough or have lots of knots on them. Maybe once every other month.

What advice would you give someone who is contemplating going natural and/or becoming discouraged with their natural journey?

Jennifer

I would advise you to be patient. If you really want it, just do it. There are a lot more tutorials and videos available now to make it much smoother for you. Enjoy the journey. Don’t compare your hair texture or growth rate to anyone else’s. It’s not all about growth, it’s about healthy coils. Have fun with trial and error because it’s the only way for you to learn what does and does not work for your hair. Expect good days and bad, but always treat your hair with TLC.

Fanzyflaminfro

What advice would you give someone who is contemplating launching their own business and/or becoming discouraged to do so?

Jennifer

RESEARCH. Whatever you desire to do, make sure you research everything about it. Utilize social networks like Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, etc. Don’t take anything personal, you are a business so conduct all of your communications as such. Build consistent and cordial relationships with your suppliers. Stay focused on your vision. Find a mentor or friend with a successful business and get pointers and tips from them whenever needed. And last, but not least, make sure you love what you do. You won’t falter or get bored so easily if you genuinely love what you do every day.
