Tennessee news anchor Pam McKelvy, of WMC-TV who recently was delivered from breast cancer decided to deliver herself from society’s prospective of what professional hair should look like. After wearing a wig for almost a year as she continued to recover from a double mastectomy; Pam decided that the wig was no-more and courageously removed her wig live on-air and showcased her God giving natural hair; along with presenting a pre-produced segment about women and their Crowns of Glory………. “HAIR” in which she talked about how during her battle with breast cancer, chemotherapy treatments caused her to become bald.
In an emotional televised testimony the ex-beauty queen, mother of a son with autism and a 15 year TV news veteran; whose hair had become a part of her franchise; Pam addressed her viewer with a confidence that only God could give; and said…………….
“A woman’s relationship with her hair is sacred. Her hair is her crown of glory. And for women in TV. It’s intensified. I lost my hair after chemo and I’ve been wearing a wig since this past March. Today I’m taking it off for good. This is a milestone, blessed experience for me. “I’m going natural. No more relaxers to straighten my hair.”
Then Pam launched into a full report of women and hair with all the professionalism expected of a news anchor, then after the segment; that’s when she revealed to the world her naturally grown, head of short coils and curls.
This is my new hair,” said Pam as she cried and expressed gratitude toward her co-workers for being so compassionate during her journey with breast-cancer. Then at the end of the segment with tears in her eyes as she sat there with her natural grown on display; she encouraged self-acceptance to her viewers, stating…………………
“I made my choice also because I think about the message I send to young women about confidence and self-acceptance,” and gave a shout-out to 12-year-old Vanessa VanDyke, the student in Florida who was in danger of being expelled from school if she did not change her natural hair style, that was stated to be distracting.
Then In closing Pam said……………
“The times are changing, and God’s delivered me with a brand-new spirit and a head full of hair.”
“I want everybody to know that no matter what you go through, it’s not about what’s on the outside, it’s about what’s on the inside. And I feel that on the inside I am more radiant and beautiful than I’ve ever been.”
This was truly a breathtaking segment and an inspirational moment; I’m tearing up just typing!
Pam McKelvy, thank you for sharing such a vulnerable moment with us. You have definitely touched my heart and inspired me. I know God as a deliverer myself and once you have been delivered; you are born again; out with the old Pam and in with the Pam that God designed you to be; natural and free!
